- ItemAimed fishing(Central Institute of Fisheries Technology, 2000) Vijayan, V.Aimed trawl fishing techniques involves searching for, finding and evaluating fish schools with the sonar, correctly navigating the vessel towards the selected school, establishing the accurate depth and configuration of the school by echo-sounding and steering the trawl to the required depth, as indicated by the net sonde.
- ItemDesign concept, rigging and operation of pelagic and semi-pelagic trawls(Central Institute of Fisheries Technology, 2000) Vijayan, V.Technological advances are essential part of any industry for furtherance and development and fishing can be no exception. The increase in production in capture fisheries was 6.0 to 6.5% per year. So that it causes the reduction in production. Increasing scarcity of fish was met with new technology to improve the performance of the gear, fleet and vessels. Diversification of fishing methods has contributed to this development and semipelagic trawling is one among diversified trawling methods. Target specific trawls were to meet this requirement and pelagic and semipelagic trawls contribute enormously in this direction.
- ItemDesign concept, rigging and operation of pelagic and semi-pelagic trawls(Central Institute of Fisheries Technology, 2000) Vijayan, V.Mid-water trawls also known as floating trawls or pelagic trawls have been introduced in the commercial fisheries to exploit concentration of fish in water layers away from the sea-bed. Detailed study on this is discussed here.
- ItemMidwater trawls and their operation(Central Institute of Fisheries Technology, 2002) Vijayan, V.Midwater trawling methods and their operations are discussed in this paper.
- ItemOtter boards - types and functions(Central Institute of Fisheries Technology, 2000) Vijayan, V.Otterboards are devices used for stabilising the trawl nets rigged with them and are also hydrodynamically dependant means of holding the net mouth open. Before the advent of otterboards, the net mouth was kept open by a rigid and self supporting structure, the resultant gear being known as beam trawl. Introduction of steam power to fishing vessel permitted faster and better controlled towing speed in comparison to the wind energy and this development opened up introduction of otterboards as spreading devices to replace the rigid beam. The paper is explaining the details about otterboards.
