- ItemClap net operation in Brahmaputra valley for capturing Tenualosa ilisha (Hamilton, 1822)(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India), Cochin, 2018) Baruah, D.; Bhuyan, A.; Dutta, A.; Baiju, M.; Nobi, P.S.; Pravin, P.Tenualosa ilisha (Hamilton, 1822) is an anadromous fish existing in estuaries and seas and migrates to freshwaters of river Brahmaputra for breeding. Clap nets, locally known in Assam as shangla jal, kholar jal and kami jal are specially designed fishing gear to catch hilsa. This gear has a purse shaped outline and comprises of a bag net supported on an elliptical bamboo frame opening. The net is operated in the month of May-July, when the flood level is high and the water velocity is strong. The maximum catch coincides with the peak migratory season of the fish, encountered in the lower reaches of the river Brahmaputra. Clap nets were observed to have an important contribution in terms of gear preference and selectivity by fishermen associated with hilsa fishing compared to seine nets and gill nets, mostly due to its ease of operation, low cost of fabrication and maintenance, low labour intensity and higher effectiveness.
- ItemFiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) sheathed canoes for north east hill regions(2013) Baiju, M.V.; Leela Edwin; Pravin, P.; Meenakumari, B.; Baiju, M.A detailed survey of the fishing crafts in the North Eastern Hill Regions was carried out during 2005-06. All the fishing crafts in the region were being constructed in a traditional way by using different species of timber. Few popular designs were selected for construction of fishing craft using low cost less durable timber species and these were provided with Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic (FRP) sheathing for increasing their durability. Periodic physical inspection of the FRP sheathed wooden fishing craft was carried out for a period of one year and it was observed that the FRP sheathed wooden canoes were in good condition after one year and do not require any maintenance as in the case of the traditional wooden fishing craft.
- ItemFish trapping devices and methods in Assam- a review(Indian Council of Agricultural Research, 2011) Pravin, P.; Meenakumari, B.; Baiju, M.; Barman, J.; Baruah, D.; Kakati, B.Traps are impounding devices into which an organism is lured either for food or shelter and are unable to escape. There are a wide number of fish trapping devices and methods operated in the rivers, flood plain wetlands (Beels), and low lying water areas of Assam. These traps are of various shapes and sizes depending on the area of operation and the behaviour of target fishes and are mostly made up of split bamboo splinters. The traps have been broadly classified as per the FAO classification of fishing gears. The different trapping devices and methods prevalent in Assam are presented and discussed in this paper. Traps are selective fishing gear which can be used for sustainable fishing in the region.
- ItemFishing trials with trawls in Brahmaputra river(Inland Fisheries Society of India, 2010) Pravin, P.; Baiju, M.; Baruah, D.; Barman, J.; Kakati, B.A mini trawl net fabricated for trial fishing and operated in river Brahmaputra at Guwahati, Palasbari and Chandrapur is discussed in this paper.
