- ItemAntidumping investigations on shrimp exports from India to US - a case study(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India), Cochin, 2009) Gopal, N.; Geethalakshmi, V.; Unnithan, G.R.The anti-dumping investigation against India and five other major shrimp exporting countries by the US was initiated in December 2003. This paper examines the impact on the quantity and value of shrimp imports from these countries in general and India in particular, during the period of investigation and after. It was observed that there has been a negative impact on Indian shrimp exporters and the number of exporters has decreased considerably. The effect on the price in the US market has been negligible with the unit value of imports actually falling. Only a short-term rise in price index was observed during the initial phase of the investigation period as well as the period when the affirmative decision was announced.
- ItemOptimization of gelatin extraction from the skin of freshwater carps by response surface methodology(Society of Fisheries Technologists (Indian), 2009) Ninan, G.; Joseph, J.; Zynudheen, A.A.; Mathew, P.T.; Geethalakshmi, V.Response Surface Methodology (RSM) was used to determine the optimum operating conditions for extracting the gelatin from the skin of three species of freshwater carps viz., Rohu(Labeo rohita), Common Carp (Cyprinus carpio) and Grass Carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella). From the screening experiments, four independent variables viz., alkali pretreatment concentration, acid pretreatment concentration, pretreatment time and extraction temperature were identified as the critical variables that had significant effect on the extraction of gelatin from the skin of these species. The responses studied were gel strength and yield. The optimum gelatin extraction conditions from the skin of three species based on the responses were 51.35 minutes (pre-treatment time) and 49.33C (extraction temperature) for Rohu skin; 60 minutes (pre-treatment time) and 57.97C (extraction temperature) for Common Carp skin; 60 minutes (pre-treatment time) and 40C (extraction temperature) for Grass Carp skin. The gelatin from the skin of the freshwater carps showed high yield, medium gel strength and high viscosity.
- ItemTechnology development efficiency and socio personal characteristics of researchers in marine fisheries(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India), Cochin, 2009) Jeeva, J.C.; Vasanthakumar, J.; Balasubramaniam, S.; Geethalakshmi, V.This paper deals with the assessment of the technology development efficiency among the researchers in marine fisheries and identification of the influencing socio-personal characteristics. The study was conducted among 72 researchers of two premier fisheries research Institutions. The results revealed that the technology development efficiency index was 88.51 plus or minus 10.01. Among the 15 variables studied, the variables viz., communication behaviour, extent of linkages with extension and clientele systems, time utilization in research, participation in professional bodies, in-service training undergone, job satisfaction, job performance and technologies generated had positive and highly significant relationship with the technology development efficiency. The R super(2) value indicated that all the variables taken together served as cause for explaining 57.60 % of variation in the efficiency level in the technology development process. The present results establish that the technology development process is efficient in marine fisheries.
