Abstract
Gill nets which consume only 0.25 kg of fuel per kg of fish caught as against 0.8 kg by trawling, is a highly energy efficient gear. The gill nets are operated for the capture of different groups of fishes such as sardines, mackerel, shrimps, hilsa, tuna, shark, seerfishes and carangids. Construction and operation of gill nets are discussed in this paper.
