As the technology of fish ca p ture developed, so did the technology for building f ishing boats. The type of fishing gea r used and the method o f fishing adopted ha v e a great inf luence on the design of a f ishing vessel. Other impor tant factors to be taken into considera tion while intr oducing new fishing vessels a r e the cost of construc tion and its running and mainte nance expenses. Ease of mano euvre is another att ribute generally sought after. The vessels have to be specially K .V.Hohan Rajan• with limited reference to the ir design, ma t erials for cons t ruc tion and mode of propulsion. Despite the introduc tion of so many well designed fishing trawl ers by indigenous const ruction and also addition of modern sophisticated deep sea fishing vessels by import; canoes and such other tradi ti onal era f t continue to hold their' sway in small sca le fisheries sec tor in India. This is especially so in gill net fishery. fiSHING CRAfT AND MARIN£ STRUCTURES IN'fRP buoy of 2-3 m in diameter a Iso has been produced in FRP. But i t is the fishing canoe in FRP employed in t raditional gillnet fishery of this area that has f ound w ide acceptance amongs t the fishermen. Already about 300 FRP canoes are in opera lion along Gujara t coast concentrated in Saurashtra region. It is a fast moving product in FRP and a flourishing industry has been established in produc tion and sale of FRP canoes. fiBRE GLASS REINfORCED PLASTIC (fRP) "t ailored"for the job. As . stated by Hardy (1955) fishing boats and gear represen the Iargest single investment in fishing industry and upon their efficiency and operati on depend the economy and the living of millions of fisher men and their families.en_US
