Many workers have attempted the development of a suitable midwa ter trawl for operation f10m smaller class of mechanised f ishing vessels in Indian waters. Pcrumal (1966), Sivan et al. (1970), Mhalathkar ct al(1975. 1983) and Varghese (1975)have described their efforts for diversification from the conventional bottom trawling operations. The mid water trawling from smaller class of vessels gains prominence as this method can effectively substitute bottom trawling whenshrimpcatchdwindles and the economic indices of the trawler drop. Pomfrets (pam• p us spp)Seer fish (Scomberomorus spp). butter fish {Lactarius spp) sil ver bar (Chirocentrus spp), ribbon fish (Trich lu rus spp) arcsomeof the quality food fishes inhabiting thecol umn layers just above the bottom of the sea. To effectively exploit these pelagic resources, a midwater trawl of proven ability is a must. Work on evolving a suitable midwater trawl and accessories were, therefore taken up by the Goa Research Centre of Central Institute of Fisheries Tech nology, resulting in the development of 10.3m unequal panel midwatcr trawl (Fig.! ). The results of oper ations conducted with this gear in combination with 120 x 60 em, ver tically curved otter boards (Sivan ct 31. op. cit) are incorporated here for the benefit of actua.l users.en_US
