- ItemFabrication of a Water Sampler for Use in AquacuIture(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India) Cochin, 1988) SAHA, C; BOSE, A. NThis sampler is light and handy and is useful for field and laboratory model studies. Since aluminium angle is used this is not affected by rusting due to repeated use in water. This simple equipment is easy to fabricate and operate. In Kemmerer type samplers, the sample is transferred from the sampler to the sample bottle for estimation of dissolved gases. But in the present sampler there is an additional advantage of collecting the sample directly in the sample bottle.
- ItemTWO NEW RECORDS OF PALAEMONID PRAWNS FROM INDIAN WATERS(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India) Cochin, 1988) JAYACHANDRAN, K. V; JOSEPH, N. Idescriptions with suitable illustrations of two species of palaemonid prawns — Macrobrachiu;n aernuluin and Palaemon (Palaemon) concinnus are furnished. M. aemulum has been enjoying an isolated distribution in New Caledonia. It is reported for the first time from India and is therefore a clear case of discontinuous distribution. Studies revealed that M. aemulum is distinct from M. nob ilii and the reasons for separating the two species are discussed. New distributional records for P. (P.) concinnus in the south-west coast of India are also given.
- ItemSTUDIES ON CULTURAL CONDITIONS OF MARINE CHROMATIUM BRUDERI TRUPER AND JANNASCH 1968(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India) Cochin, 1988) DHEVENDARAN, KPhotosynthetic characteristics of a purple sulfur bacterium, Chromataun buderi, cultured under different ranges of pH, temperature, light intensities and ammonium chloride concentrations were examined. Maximum bacteriochlorophyll a synthesis was observed at pH 6.5 whereas the optimum growth was at pH 8.0. In general, higher temperature tended to inhibit the chlorophyll a synthesis and growth. 30°C is the optimum temperature both for chlorophyll a synthesis and growth. At 25 tIE m —25 the bacteriochlorophyll a content and growth attained maximum level. The response to this low light intensity is an adaptation that ensure a high photosynthetic rate for the purple sulfur bacterium that usually occurs in dimly lit environment. Besides these, ammonium chloride at low concentration enhances both chlorophyll a sy thesis and growth. Above 0.5 % of it cause the nitrogen-chlorosis and also retard the growth of the bacterium. Possible chemical and structural mechanisms involved are discussed.
- ItemLength Weight relationship of two Palaemonid Prawns,Macrobrachium idella and M. scabriculum- A comparative study(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India) Cochin, 1988) JAYACHANDRAN, K. V; JOSEPH, N. ILength-weight relationships of two commercially important freshwater prawns, Macrobrachium idella and M. scabriculum, have been worked out separately for the two sexes of the two species. 't' test showed that growth departs significantly from the isometric growth in the case of both sexes of M. idella and in the female of M. scarbriculum. Therefs re, the cubic formula W = CL 3 may be applied only in the case of males of M. scabriculum. In all the other cases W = CLD may be followed.
- ItemDetermination of acute mercury toxicity to developing stages of Cyprinus carpio and Cirrhinus Mrigala(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India) Cochin, 1988) SHRIVASTAVA, SHARD; RAO, K.S; DHANEKAR, S; PANDYA, S.SToxicity of inorganic mercury to different life history stages of fresh water fishes, Cyprinus carpio and Cirrhinus mrigala were demonstrated by static bioassays. 48 and 94 % of egg hatching occurred in controls at 72 and 24 h of experimentation in C. carpio and C. mrigala respectively. While fish eggs in water containing mercuric chloride showed delayed development as compared to the control. LC50, LC100 and safe concentrations of hatchling, fry and :fingerling were calculated. Hatchling and fry were observed to be more susceptible as compared to fingerlings of C. carpio and C. mrigala.
- ItemStudies on Lypolytic Bacteria in Stored Fish Etroplus suratensis (Bloch)(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India)Cochin, 1988) Sreekumari, K. R.; CHANDRASEKHARAN, M; LAKSHMANAPERUMALSAMY, PThe distribution of total hectrotrophic bacteria (THB) and lipolytic bacteria in various regions (body surface, gill, intestine and flesh) of fish Etroplus suratensis (Bloch) during storage at 28 + 2°C and 4 °C was studied. Pseudomonas dominated at reduced temperature whereas at 28 + 2°C and in fresh condition Vibrio, Aeromonas, and Acinetobacter dominated. Lipolytic activity was elaborated by the members of various genera and their activity varied in different lipid compounds (t~ib~tyrin, tw~en 80, tween 60, tween 40 and tween 20). Tributyrin was utilized by maJonty of the is~lates. AH the selected isolates preferred a temperature of 35°C and pH 6.0 for their maximum growth. Aeromonas and Vibrio showed maximum growth at 0.5 % Na CJ concentration while 3 % NaCl was found to be optimum for Pseudomonas

BThe presence of Salmonella in freshwater and marine fish has generally been related to faecal contamination of the water from which they were harvested (Wuthe Findel, 1972). The effects of environmental conditions were further demonstrated by Geldreic and Clarke (1966) when they related faecal bacterial population in the intestinal tract of cat fish to varying degrees of contamination.
- ItemImpact of species composition and artificial Feeds on the Growth of carps(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India) Cochin, 1988) NANDEESHA, M. C; MURTHY, C. KTwo trials conducted to demonstrate the suitability of composite carp culture in a small, seasonal, shallow village pond with varied species composition and stocking density indicated the possibility of obtaining higher production with reduced number .of species. During the first trial, the Indian major carps, silver carp, common carp and fringelipped carp were stocked at a density of 5625 fingerlings/ha in the pond in which the maximum water spread area was 1600 m 2 • The fish grown over a period of seven months yielded a production of only 242 kg. However, during the second trial, an increase in production by 60.33 % was achieved over the same period in the same pond by stocking only the Indian major carps and common carp at a density of 4687.5 fingerlings/ ha and feeding them daily with silkworm faecal matter based artificial feed at about 5 % of their body weight. The results indicated that for seasonal, shallow ponds stocking of only three species of carps, namely, catla, rohu and common carp would suffice to get optimum yield.
