- ItemSome Fungal Infestations of Dried Fishes in Cochin(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India) Cochin, 1985) GUPTA, RANU; SAMUEL, C. TDried fish constitutes a regular item of trade in India, particularly in the interior parts far away from the sea and rivers. The poor section of the society is the main consumer. The quality of dried fish never receives much attention at any stage of processing (drying) and storage. A good amount of these fish is discarded during drying due to fungal growth to avoid the danger of mycotoxin production. A survey of the dried fish from the Cochin markets had revealed that they do carry fungal infestations and their chances of mycotoxin production cannot be ruled out as the strains of Aspergillus fiavus, Aspergillus ochraceus and Fusarium spp. have been isolated.
- ItemA RE-DESCRIPTION OF THE LITTLE KNOWN RABBIT FISH SIGANUS LINEATUS(CUVIER AND VALENCIENNES)(PISCESSIGANIDAE)WITH NOTES ON SIGANID FISHES OF THE VEMBANAD LAKE(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India) Cochin, 1985) KURUP, B. MADHUSOODANA; SAMUEL, C. TSiganus lineatus (Cuv. and Val) is reported from the coast of peninsular India for the first time and a detailed description of it is given based on morphology and meristic characters. It differs from the other allied species of the genus Siganus Forskal in having an oval body without spots and having fifteen parallel longitudinal golden yellow bands, relatively larger last dorsal spine, maxillary position far below the level of the orbit and cheek with distinct rows of scales. S. javus (Linnaeus) and S. canaliculatus (Park) were also obtained from the Vembanad Lake. Short notes on the habitat, occurrence, abundance, seasonal and geographic distribution in relation to fluctuating hydrological conditions of the Vembanad Lake are incorporated together with a key for their identification
- ItemSTUDIES ON THE OCCURRENCE OF ENTERIC BACTERIA IN THE ESTUARINE WATERS ALONG MANGALORE COAST(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India) Cochin, 1985) SRIKANTAIAH, M; SHENOY, M. G; MOHANKUMAR, K. COccurrence of enteric bacteria in water, sediment and shellfishes of Mulki, Pavanje, Gurpur and Netravathi estuaries of the Mangalore coast is reported. 70 water samples, 71 sediment samples and 37 shellfish samples were analysed in 18 months. Total bacterial load in sediment and shellfishes was found to be more than that in water samples. The total bacterial load was not very high. However, enterococci, particularly coliforms in sediments, water and shellfishes were found to be quite high, indicative of faecal pollution. The incidence of Salmonella spp. was recorded in all the estuaries except the M ulki Estuary
- ItemTHE EFFECT OF SALINITY ON SOME ENDOCOMMENSALIC CLIMATES FROM SHIP WORMS(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India) Cochin, 1985) SANTHAKUMARI, VThe ciliates, Nucleocorbula adherens, Boveria teredinidi, Trichodina balakrishnia, Thingmozoon fencheli and Nyctothereus marina, live inside the mantle cavity of the shipworms in the estuaries and backwaters of the south-west coast of India. Seasonal incidence and relative abundance of these ciliates showed that they were more abundant during the low saline than the high saline periods. Eventhough these ciliates can endure higher salinities through gradual acclimatization of their habitat it was found that they prefer low salinity for active growth and healthy existence.
- ItemRAPAPPORT'S BROTH , A BETTER ENRICHMENT MEDIUM IN THE IDENTIFICATION OF SALMONELLA FROM PROCESSED FROG LEGS(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India) Cochin, 1985) RAJAGOPALAN, D; DESPANDE, C. K; JOSHI, LEELASalmonella serotypes recovered from processed frog legs were compared on three enrichment media,Selenite cystine broth (SC),Tetrachionate broth (TT) and Rapapports broth (RB) 25/37°C after pre-enrichment in lactose broth. The studies indicate that enrichment media RB 25/37°C is superior to SC broth as well as TT broth. TT broth facilitated more of Salmonella serotypes to grow, where as SC broth enabled different groups of salmonella serotypes to grow.
- ItemPRESERVATION OF SARDINELLA LONGICEPS IN ICED AND CHILLED SEA WATER PART I- CHANGES DURING STORAGE WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO BACTERIAL LOAD AND NITROGENOUS COMPOUND(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India) Cochin, 1985) KRISHNAKUMAR, S; HIREMATH, G. G; MENON, N. R; SHETTY, H. P. COil sardines in prime condition were subjected to onboard chHling; Two lots were chilled in CSW (samples C and Cl), a third lot was chilled in crushed ice (sample I) and a fourth lot left uniced on deck (Sample AI). Upon landing sample AI was iced and sample CI was removed from the CSW and iced. All the four samples were kept in a chilled room for storage studies. The fish chilled and stored in CSW rec?rd~d the least, and the fish subjected to delayed icing, the highest values for all the m~1ces of spoilage namely, free amino nitrogen, trimethylamine (TMA) and total volat1l~ b?-se nitrogen (TVBN). The total psychrophilic bacterial number also showed a s1mtlar trend. The organoleptic assessment of the cooked samples revealed C I,CI, AI to be the order of preference throughout the storage. This assessment was found tc hold good for the rest of the parameters as well. The CSW held fishes were found to be distinctly superior to the iced ones for the first five days of storage. Su?h a ~arked prevalence in quality for five days would suffice for the fish to fetch a premmm m t~e_ market over other landings of the same fish whether chilled or unchilled .. _Chilhngonboard in CSW and icing the same after landings, did not show encouragmg results
- ItemSTUDIES ON THE PROBABLE SOURCES OF FUNGAL INFECTION AND THE CONTROL MEASURES IN A FISH SEED FARM(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India) Cochin, 1985) GEORGE, J.P; SEN, P. K; VENUGOPAL, G; HINGORANI, H. GThe causes of mortality of fry of cultivable fishes in a fish seed farm were investigated. The mortality was due to fungal infection and the pathogen was Saprolegnia sp. The sources of infection were unhygienic breeding hapas, spawnery hapas in the cemented ponds, hatching jars and excess feeding. Application of one kg slaked lime foHowed by 75g of CuSo4 (l-0.5 p.p.m.) and 150g of KMno4 (2-1 p.p.m.) per each nursery (]_58m3 water) controlled the pathogen.
- ItemANTIBIOTIC SENSITIVITY OF VIBRIO PARAHAEMOLYTICUS STRAINS(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India) Cochin, 1985) PRADEEP, R; LAKSHMANAPERUMALSAMY, PThe strains of Vibrio parahaemolyticus isolated from water, sediment, plankton, fish and prawn of Cochin backwater were tested for sensitivity to ten antibiotics namely, ampicillin, chloramphenicol, gentamycin, kanamycin, neomycin, oxytetracycline, penicillin, polymyxin-B, streptomycin and sulphadiazine. Of the 120 isolates tested, 96.7 and 93.3% were sensitive to gentamycin and chloramphenicol respectively. No strain was sensitive to penicillin and only 5% were sensitive to kanamycin. Isolates from fish and prawn showed higher resistance to ampicillin and none of them was sensitive to kanamycin. Multiple resistant V. parahaemolyticus strains were more in prawn than in other sampels.
