The quality standards adopted by the importing countries, necessitates regular monitoring of these metals. Cephalopods and their products from India enjoy a high demand in the international market, especially Europe and America. The state of Gujarat, particularly Saurashtra coast contributes a major share of the cephalopod products exported from the country. About 20 different types of cephalopod products are exported from this region. The levels of Cadmium in fresh and frozen squid and cuttlefish in whole and in different product forms from the industries of Saurashtra region were determined. Among the different product" about 20% of whole cuttlefish samples and tentacles showed cadmium levels above the permissible limits of 2 ppm, which implies the necessity of proper cleaning procedures during the processing stage.
