This paper discusses the present status of the artisanal fisheries sector and all the problems of the sector like overfishing, conflict with the mechanized sector, lack of restrictions, capital intensive operations, and lack of alternative employment with special reference to the ring seine fishery of south Kerala. The need for management measures to overcome the present crisis is highlighted.
