- ItemExploited Fishery Resources of the Vembanad Lake: Fishery Based on Pokkali Fields and Polders(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India) Cochin, 1992)About 2164 ha of Pokkali fields adjacent to Vembanad lake are utilized for the practloe of prawn filtration. 'The total annual production ls 1613.0 t. The seasonal production in these fields varied from 170-18(1) kg/ha and the average yield is computed as 745.4 kg/ha. 'lhecatches from Pokkali fieldscomprisedofpenaeids suchas Metapenaeus dobsoni (66.59%), Penaeus indicus (19.%), Mmonocems (523%) and fishes (8.28%).Six polders namely, Mathikayal, Marthandom, Ranimangalam, C.Block, H.Block and Chlthlra with an approximate area of 3875 ha are utilized for trapping and holding of fishes in the lower Kuttanad region. The total production is computed at 65.1 t. The catches from the polders comprised of freshwater fishes (93.5%) and palaemonid prawns (6.5%).
- ItemEffect of Fruit Iuices with Acetic Acid on the Quality and Storage Stability of Pickled Fish(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India) Cochin, 1992)The results of pickling fish with fruit juices and acetic acid in comparison with acetic acid alone are reported. Tamarind juice, lime juice and gooseberry juioe were tested for their pickling effect along with acetic acid. The biochemical and microbiological qualities of all the experimental samples remained good throughout the 6 months of study. The pickles prepared with tamarind juice along with acetic acid were superior to other pickles in colour, taste and texture. The pickle prepared using gooseberry juice and acetic acid was poor and unacceptable.
- ItemCopper, Chromium and Manganese in Water and Sediment of Kali Estuary, Karwar(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India) Cochin, 1992)Copper, chromium and manganese concentrations ln the water and sediment samples along with some physicochemical parameters were determined at four stations of Kali estuary. 'l'he moan concentrations of Cu, Cr and Mn in water were 0.11, 0.044 and 0.327 ppm respectively. The corresponding values for sediment were 7.022, 14.13 and 185.66 ppm on dry weight basis. ln the spatial sequence, the variation in trace metals concentration of sediment exhibited a clear increasing trend from the estuarine mouth towards upstream. Range in temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen were 27.30 - 34.(X]°C, 0.14 - 29.04%¢ and 3.88 - 6.70 ml/1 respectively.
- ItemBacterial Profile of Fresh and Spoiled Fish Mince from johnius clussumieri at Refrigerated Storage(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India)Cochin, 1992)Fish mince from Iohnius dussumieri was examined for the changes in the bacteriological profile in fresh and spoiled condition at refrigerated storage (4i1°C). The percentage composition of bacterial flora was found to vary with fresh fish, fresh mince and spoiled mince. Acinetobacter and Aeromonas which weredominant in fresh fish decreased drastically upon mincing, washing and storage. ln fresh mince 71.0% of the bacterial population comprised of gram positive group of which Micrococcus was the dominant. Flora of the spoiled mince was dominated by gram negative group (80.0%) comprising mainly of Vilmb followed by Pseudomonas
