Among gram-negative rod-shaped bacteria causing food borne gastroenteritis, the most important are members of the genus salmonella. Salmonella is the genetic name applied to a group of bacteria, which was formerly known as paratyphoid bacteria derived by D.E. salmon in 1885. Salmonellas are enteric organisms belonging to the family Enterobacteriaceae.en_US
