    Periliminary investigations on sun-hemp twine as a fishing net material

    THE sun-hemp twine is an important net-making material in India next only to cotton and coconut fibre. Though the fishermen throughout the coast­ line of India are using sun-hemp twines for gill-nets, boat-seines, beach­ seines, ba-g-nets, stake-nets, etc., the characteristics of the twine as a fishing gear material have not yet been investigated. In these experiments, we have carried out a preliminary investigation on breaking strength, breaking stretch and rotting of the twines during continuous immersion in sea-water with a view to taking up further investigations on improving the tWine as a gear material.

    Preliminary studies on the characteristics of coir twines

    COIR in the form of twines and ropes is a fishing gea r material widely used, particularl y in South [ndia, for the fabrication of essential components of several types of fishing implem ents. Very little information is on record elucidati ng the essential dyna mic characteri tics of this important gear material. Miyamoto a nd Shariff (1958) in a n earlier communication have presented certai n details on t he cha racteristics a nd rotti ng qualities of one va riety of c:oir twine. The present stud y on the characteristics of different grades of coir twines was underta ken at the insta nce of Dr. Miyamoto with a view to eval ua te the qualities of the different grades of coir twines•and to facilitate determination of thei r utility as a fishing gear material.

    Studies on the effectiveness of certain chemical preservatives on cotton twines

    Even trough chemical fish net preservatives are extensively used in many countries of the temperate region their use in India seems to be restristed to the States of Gujerat and certain regions of West Bengal (Kuriyan and Nayar, 1961). Experiments conducted earlier to evaluate the effectiveness of some of the imported chemical preservatives on cotton (Miyamoto and Shariff, 1962).

    ABACA of manila hemp is a leaf fibre extracted from the plant Musa textillis belonging to the family Musaceae. The largest portion of the world's production of this fibre is from the Philippine Islands. The main use to which these fibre are put is for the manufacture of twines and ropes.
