- ItemPeriliminary investigations on sun-hemp twine as a fishing net material(ICAR, 1959) Miyamoto, H.; Shariff, A.T.THE sun-hemp twine is an important net-making material in India next only to cotton and coconut fibre. Though the fishermen throughout the coast line of India are using sun-hemp twines for gill-nets, boat-seines, beach seines, ba-g-nets, stake-nets, etc., the characteristics of the twine as a fishing gear material have not yet been investigated. In these experiments, we have carried out a preliminary investigation on breaking strength, breaking stretch and rotting of the twines during continuous immersion in sea-water with a view to taking up further investigations on improving the tWine as a gear material.

- ItemPreliminary studies on the characteristics of coir twines(ICAR, 1959) Nayar, S.G.COIR in the form of twines and ropes is a fishing gea r material widely used, particularl y in South [ndia, for the fabrication of essential components of several types of fishing implem ents. Very little information is on record elucidati ng the essential dyna mic characteri tics of this important gear material. Miyamoto a nd Shariff (1958) in a n earlier communication have presented certai n details on t he cha racteristics a nd rotti ng qualities of one va riety of c:oir twine. The present stud y on the characteristics of different grades of coir twines was underta ken at the insta nce of Dr. Miyamoto with a view to eval ua te the qualities of the different grades of coir twines•and to facilitate determination of thei r utility as a fishing gear material.
- ItemComparitive study of certain characteristics of the common vegetable fibre twines for fishing nets(ICAR, 1960) Kuriyan, G.K.; Radhalekshmy, K.Twisted twines are essential components for fabrication of fishing nets and other similar snares. Selection of twines for the different gear depends on the one hand upon the dynamic characteristics and on the other.

Some of t he mari t ime States in I ndia have com pleted the first phase of the general • mecha niza t ion • programme. namely-t he instal lation of engi nes for propulsion in the existing fishing boats (Sct na, 1955; Deshpandc. 1958; Gurtner, 1958; K uri ya n a nd Balasubra manya n, 1 959). The next step ob'iouvly is the introduction of modern fishing gar to increaset he catch-per-un i t effort and thereby to be in commensu rate with ti-e extra capital out hy. Chidambaram (1 952) and Joh11 eta/. (1959) review the attempts rn(l.dc ea rlier for the i nt rod uction of new gear i n Indian waters.
- ItemFurther account of the rocklobster fishing experiments with bottom set gill nets(ICAR, 1961) Balasubramanyan, R.; Satyanarayana, A.V.V.; Sadanandan, K.A.this paper is made an attempt to know the fishing experiments in the bottom ste gill nets areas of kollam, vizhingam, varkalla and colachal-muttom. also this paper shows the experimental rock-lobster fishing operations conducted during the 1958-59.
- ItemStudies on the effectiveness of certain chemical preservatives on cotton twines(Indian Council of Agricultural Research, 1962) Nayar, G.S.Even trough chemical fish net preservatives are extensively used in many countries of the temperate region their use in India seems to be restristed to the States of Gujerat and certain regions of West Bengal (Kuriyan and Nayar, 1961). Experiments conducted earlier to evaluate the effectiveness of some of the imported chemical preservatives on cotton (Miyamoto and Shariff, 1962).
- ItemStudies on the efficacy of chemical preservatives on coir twines(Indian Council of Agricultural Research, 1962) Nayar, G.S.; Vanaja, M.Although certain studies have been made on the dynamic characteristics of coir twines as a fishing gear materialthe infromation on the methods of preservation of this important vegetable fibre twine is scanty. while studying the effectiveness of certain methods of tannin preservation on coir have indicated the importance of such studies.
- Item'Chala Vala' Encircling gill nets for sardines and mackerels of the kerala coast with special reference to their design and construction(Indian Council of Agricultural Research, 1962) Satyanarayana, A.V.V.; Sadanandan, K.A.For determining the relative efficiency of the gear, a survey of the indigenous gill nets of the Kerala coast, with particular reference to Chala vala was undertaken and the results of the survey are incorporated in the present communication.

- ItemStudies on the preservation of manilla twines(Indian Council of Agricultural Research, 1962) Nayar, G.S.; Naidu, M.R.ABACA of manila hemp is a leaf fibre extracted from the plant Musa textillis belonging to the family Musaceae. The largest portion of the world's production of this fibre is from the Philippine Islands. The main use to which these fibre are put is for the manufacture of twines and ropes.
