    Effect of Corn Oil on the Quality and Storage Stability of Pickled Fish

    The results of preparing lish pickles using corn oil and gingili oil are reported. Results showed that the pickle made using corn oil and acetic acid was superior in keeping quality, taste and texture than the pickle prepared using gingili oil and acetic acid. In addition the production of alpha amino nitrogen and free fatty acid during storage was found to be much less in corn oil and acetic acid treated piclde.

    Hydrographic Conditions in the Region off Hosbettu, South Kanara Coast and its Influence on Pelagic Fisheries

    Observations on the oceanographic parameters like temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen and transparency were made at four stations off the Hosbettu region, along South Kanara coast. Temperature and salinity of columnar waters were found to have direct effect on the fishery of oil sardine and Indian mackerel of the region. However the pelagic fishery was indirectly influenced by pH, dissolved oxygen and transparency in the study area.

    Filamentous Fungi Isolated from the EEZ along the West Coast of India

    Thirty nine isolates of filamentous fungi of the genera Alternaria, Cladosporium, Fusarium and Penicillium were isolated from 78 water samples of 15 stations during FORV Sagar Sampada cruise No. 24 (16-11-1986 to 04-12-1986). Cladosporium was dominant including the marine species C. herbarum. Most of the filamentous fungi isolated restricted themselves to the coastal areas and theislands indicating their terrigenous origin and adaptation to high salinity. Aeromycological studies of four laboratories and hydrographic winch area of the ship revealed the presence of Aspergillus, Cephalosporium, Curvularia, Drechslera, Fusarium and Penicillium. Fusarium was dominant followed by Aspergillus including A. flavus.

    A Comparative Study on the Quality Characteristics of Traditional Masmin and Mechanical Kiln Prepared Masmin

    The quality characteristics of traditional masmin as well as masmin prepared in the mechanical kiln have been compared. The quality of the mechanical kiln prepared product is superior when compared to the traditional product.

    Size at Maturity in the Male Crab Scylla serrata as Determined by Chela Allometry and Gonad Condition

    Sexual maturity in the male mud crab, Scylla serraza attains at the size range 81-90 mm carapace width (CW). At 97 mm CW 50% of males are mature. Highly significant (P < 0.00l) relationships are obtained between chela allometry and carapace measurements. About 34% of male crabs harvested commercially from the Karwar area during December, 1984 and November, 1985 were immature.

    Adoption Behaviour and Impact of Technology Transfer among Fish Farmers

    The extent of adoption of eleven improved fish farming practices has been studied among 80 fish farmers. The multiple regression analysis revealed a R’ value of 0.5718. Among the characteristics of fish farmers, distance of fish farm from home, knowledge about improved fish farming and fish yield per hectare had significant positive influence towards their adoption behaviour.
