    The Effects of Slime film on Barnacle Settlement

    The role of slime film on macrofouling was studied by comparing the ratio of settlement of cyprids to young barnacles on panels with slime films and panels that had been sterilized. Settlement was greater on the panels with slime. The rate of settlement varied significantly during different months and different exposure periods. Similar patterns were found on the sterile as well as the panels with slime. The results were compared to similar observations and studies from different parts of the world.

    An overview of the ecology of Indian tropical balanomorph and ·Iepidomorph barnacles is presented. Findings relating to systematics, . distribution, the role of primary film and its significance in barnacle' settlement, breeding, seasonal and ecological succession, substratum preferences, growth, and biomass generation an; discussed. Contributions relating to physical, chemical, and geographical factors such as salinity, temperature, waves, tides, currents, light, and color, nature, and texture of substrata are reviewed with particular reference to indian tropical conditions. Some thrust areas to be dealt in greater detail in future work are also suggested.

    Gill nets and their operation

    Gill nets which consume only 0.25 kg of fuel per kg of fish caught as against 0.8 kg by trawling, is a highly energy efficient gear. The gill nets are operated for the capture of different groups of fishes such as sardines, mackerel, shrimps, hilsa, tuna, shark, seerfishes and carangids. Construction and operation of gill nets are discussed in this paper.

    Application of geographic information system in fisheries management

    Geographic information system (GIS) is a computer based information system designed to work with spatially reference data. GIS technology integrates common database operations such as query and statistical analysis with the unique visualization and geographic analysis. These abilities distinguish GIS from other information systems and make it valuable for explaining events, predicting outcomes and planning strategies and hence GIS is looked upon as a tool to assist in decision making and management of attributes that needs to be analyzed spatially .
