- ItemEffect of Ecdysial Cycle on the Semen and Spermatophore production of the Indian White Prawn (Penaeus indicus H.M. Edwards)(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India)Cochin, 1997) Muthuraman, A.LAdult male Penaeus Indicus have a prolonged premolt phase and short inter and postmolt phases in its ecdysial cycle. Vas deferens factor and spermatophore weight of male prawns show a declining tendency from post to premolt phases with a successive reduction in the biochemical composition of vas deferens and terminal ampoule. The correlation analysis indicate differential intensity of coefficients between biochemical and morphometrical relationships of semen and spermatophore production of P. Indicus.
- ItemEvaluation of two Empirical Devices for Measurement of Fish Texture(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India)Cochin, 1997) Hassan, Femeena; George, Sajan; Mathew, Saleena; Mukundan, M.KTwo types of texturometers (weight-operated and spring operated) were fabricated for the evaluation of fish texture. These devices were used to measure the toughness of twenty species of commercially important fishes in raw and cooked conditions. Texture was also evaluated by organoleptic method. A significant positive correlation could be obtained between organoleptic scores and the texturometer readings in the case of fish fillets both in raw and cooked condition.
- ItemCosts and Earnings of Trawlers operating at Tuticorin, Tamilnadu(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India)Cochin, 1997) Senthilathiban, R; Venkataramanujam, K; Selvaraj, P; Sanjeeviraj, GThe aspects of profitability and economic efficiency of mechanised boats fitted with 106 HP marine diesel engine were studied at Tuticorin, Tamilnadu. Random sampling was followed to select 10 respondents from among the owner-operators of the above said boats. Data collection was carried out once a week for a time span of 53 weeks from July 1992 to June 1993. Thus a total of 530 fishing trips were considered for data processing and the economic estimates are for an average fishing trip. The fixed cost and variable cost per trip were estimateed as Rs. 320.24 and Rs. 4016.20 respectively. The mean gross returns was Rs. 6738.57 and the meen net profit came to Rs. 2402. Important indicators of economic efficiency were also estimated and discussed. The predominent item of cost was fuel. The earnings were influenced by fish landings as well as fish prices prevailing in different seasons
- ItemEco-Friendly Demersal Fish Trawling Systems(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India)Cochin, 1997) Mounsey, R.P; Prado, JTrawling has impacts on the seabed when various elements of bottom rigging, particularly the trawl boards and goundrope, skip ub or dig into the substrate. Trawl fishermen rig their gear to efficiently sweep the seabed which results in the destaiction of marine organisms or change the substrate. In northern Australian fork rigged semi-pelagic trawl system has been developed which was found compatible with that of a standard similarly sized demersal trawl system. Although this system had significantly less impact on the substrate, and produced a higher quality product, fishermen found it difficult to operate.Consequently the original standard demersal trawl system was then slightly modified in order to achive similar results. The modified system has proven its commercial viability in Australia's tropical seas. The ongoing reserch is now focussing on further simplifying the standard system with a possible cross-over board to net, bridle arrangement. This paper describes the three systems, includeing the general rigging arrangements and net design
- ItemDevelopment of Ready-to-fry Crab Products(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India)Cochin, 1997) Raju, C.V; Bhaskar, N; Dhananjaya, SCrabs are one of the major components of seafood industry in the world. This study contains the development of two important ready to fry products from crab meat viz., crab sticks and crab cutlets. The suitable recipes for these products are standardized and their chemical analysis recorded.
