    Stratification in Karnataka Reservoirs
(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India)Cochin, 2002) Das, A.K.
Stratification studies unveil some of the ongoing limnological processes related to fish production. In the present paper, an attempt is made to study the thermal and chemical stratifications in eleven reservoirs under Cauvery, Krishna and Sharavathy river systems in Karnataka. Harangi, Manchanbele and Bhadra reservoirs showed thermoclinity with clear demarcation of epi- and metalimnion. Oxygen profile was orthograde in Ghataprabha, Malaprabha, Narayanpur and Bhadra and clinograde in Harangi, Manchanbele, Nugu, Vani Vilas Sagar and Linganamakki. The strength of oxycline in water column especially during pre-monsoon influences the success of gillnetting operations, as the fish confines to the epilimnetic zone as observed in Manchanbele

Selectivity Estimates for Sardinella longiceps (Valenciennes) in the Gill Net Fishery off Cochin
(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India)Cochin, 2002) Thomas, Saly N; Hridayanathan, C
Length frequency of sardine, Sardinella longiceps (Valenciennes), caught in gill nets with mesh size of 32, 34, 36, 38 and 40 mm operated off Cochin (Kerala) was recorded. Using this, the selectivity parameters of the nets of these mesh sizes were assessed. The size range of S. longiceps caught was 12 to 20 cm. The estimated selection factors ranged from 4.56 to 4.67 and the selection lengths ranged from 14.7 to 18.7 cm. Gill nets with mesh size less than 34 mm did not facilitate the escapement of S. longiceps which had not attained the stage of first maturity

Relationship between Development of Secondary Sex Characters and Androgenic Gland in Macrobrachium idella (Hilgendorf)
(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India)Cochin, 2002) Cubelio, Sherine S.; Thampy, D.M
The secondary sex characters such as length of cheliped, length of appendix masculina and number of spines on it, and the width of vas deferens are under the control of the androgenic gland and have no relationship with the body size of the prawn, Macrobrachium idelk. Of the 30 individuals randomly selected, 22 had a body length to cheliped length ratio below 1:1.5. The size of the androgenic gland and appendix masculina were not fully developed in them, indicating that they are reproductively inactive. Remaining 8 individuals, having a body length to cheliped length ratio above 1:1.5, had well-developed androgenic gland and appendix masculina showing that there is positive correlation between the biomass of androgenic gland and the degree of development of secondary sex characters.

Modified Extensive Culture of Penaeus monodon Using Indigenous Feed
(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India)Cochin, 2002) Jose, Susheela; Nair, K.G. Ramachandran; Mathew, P.T.; Stephen, Jose; Madhavan, P
Short-term monoculture of Penaeus monodon was done using an indigenously developed feed to evaluate the efficiency of the feed with respect to growth, survival, production, food conversion ratio and cost benefit ratio. P. monodon post-larvae were stocked at the rate of 5 nos.m"2 (12 mm; 7 mg) during 1995 and 3 nos.m 2 (15 mm; 10 mg) during 1996. The feeding schedule and other management practices were identical in both the trials. The . shrimps were harvested at the end of 85 days and a production of 732.5 kg.ha"1 (average size: 150 mm; 20 g) was obtained in 1995 and 647.5 kg.ha"1 (average size: 160 mm; 26 g) in 1996.

Influence of Nutripro-Aqua Incorporated Feed on Water Quality, Primary Pond Productivity and Growth in the Culture of Pearl Spot
(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India)Cochin, 2002) Jayaprakas, V; Abraham, Kurian Mathew
Supplementary feeding may influence the water quality parameters, especially the productivity. Productivity is one of the principal water quality parameters that determine fish production. An experiment was carried out to evaluate the relationship between productivity and growth in Etroplus suratensis fed diet containing Nutripro-Aqua, a commercial growth promoter. Fishes were cultured in cement tanks for 180 days and the growth and productivity were monitored periodically. Nutripro-Aqua was administered through a standard pelletized feed with 40% protein at four dosages, 0, 8, 9.5 and 11%. Productivity and growth of fishes were found to be significantly high in 11% treatment, which indicates the influence of the pond productivity on growth of fishes.
