    Effect of chilled Sea Water Storage of oil Sardine on quality changes during frozen storage

    The shelf life of frozen oil sardine can be improved by preserving the fish immediately after catch in chilled water before freezing .Delayed icing caused considerable deterioration in quality and reduces frozen shelf life. Oil sardine preserved in chilled sea water were found to be suitable for freezing upto 5 days whereas iced samples could be frozen only upto 2 days .

    Spoilage bacteria of Penaeus indicus

    Bacteria isolated from raw (untreated and unprocessed) prawn (Penaeus indicus) stored at 28±2°C, 4°C and-18°C were tested for spoilage potential, namely, production of protease, lipase, amylase, reduction of trimethylamineoxide (TMAO) to trimethylamine (TMA), production of off odours from flesh broth and halo zone around the colony grown on flesh agar. About 63 % of the total isolates tested were potential spoilers. Members of Vibrio, Pseudomonas and Acinetobacter were found to be dominant potential spoilers at all temperatures

    Nitrogen Fixing Bacteria, Azotobacter sp. in Aquatic sediments

    Non-symbiotic, free living, nitrogen fixing bacteria, Azotobacter sp. was estimated in sediments of estuarine, marine, backwater and mangrove environments of Portonovo. Number of colony forming units (CFU) of Azotobacter sp. was less (5 to 27 cells/g of dry sediment). CFU of total heterotrophic bacteria (THB), actinomycetes and fungi were between 4.1 x 106 and 4.5 x 107, 0.8 x 105 and 4.9 x 105, 1.1 x 105 and 3.8 x 105/g respectively. Mangrove sediments contained more CFU of the above microbial groups.

    Length-Weight relationship and relative condition factor in Daysciaena albida (Cuv.) and Gerres filamentosus (Cuv.)

    The length-weight relationship of Daysciaena alhida and Gerres jilamentosus were calculated separately for indeterminants, mature males and mature females. The logarithmic regression equation obtained for D. albida - males: log w = -1.5055 + 2.8618 log l; females: log w = -0.9260 + 2.4089 log l ; indeterminants: log w = -l.7188 + 3.0616 log l. The regression co-efficients between males and fem ales, males and in determinants and female and in determinants showed significant differences. In G. filamentosus the relationship can be expressed as males: logw = -1.3224 + 2.8740 log 1; females: log w = -1.2874 + 2.8381 log l; indeterminants: log w = -0.8167 + 2.2558 log l. The difference in regression co-efficients between male and female are insignificant at 5 % level whereas significant differences were observed between males and indeterminants and females and indeterminants. The relative condition factor (Kn) was calculated for the above two species. In D. albida the reasons for the :fluctuations of Kn values can be attributed to both spawning cycle as well as feeding intensity whereas in G. filamentosus it synchronises mainly with spawning cycle.

    Formulation,Processing and Water Stability of Pelleted Feeds with Varying Levels of Protien used in Carp Nutrition Studies

    Four dry pelleted feeds containing 20 %, 30 %, 40 % and 45 % protein were formulated incorporating casein as the main source of protein for m,e in carp nutrition studies. The caloric content in all the feeds was maintained constant. The method of processing is described. The formulated diets were tested for water stability. This test has revealed that the diet containing 20 %, 30 % and 40 % protein had better stability than that containing 45 % protein. This was. due to the· relatively higher fat content in the former tbree diets. However, all the feeds were sufficiently stable at the end of one hour in which time carps are known to utilise supplementary diets.
