Abstract
A general account is given of the role of fish in world food supply. The distribution of protein and nutritional aspects of fish are considered, together with the extent to which world fisheries have developed to meet the increased demands for food. The potential for increasing India's fish catch is discussed; marine fish production for the 8 main states is tabulated, divided into oil sardine, mackerel, prawn and other varieties. A brief note on the socio-economic status of fishermen is included.
