- ItemPickled Product from a Gastropod, Babylonia spirata(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India)Cochin, 1997) Patterson, Jamila; Ayyakkannu, KThe gastropod. Babylonia spirata meat was softened by cooking under pressure and pickle was prepared using standard recipe and methodology. The shelf life was assessed by chemical, microbial and organoleptic characters during the storage period of 150 days. The pickle did not show any specific signs of spoilage.
- ItemEffect of Ecdysial Cycle on the Semen and Spermatophore production of the Indian White Prawn (Penaeus indicus H.M. Edwards)(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India)Cochin, 1997) Muthuraman, A.LAdult male Penaeus Indicus have a prolonged premolt phase and short inter and postmolt phases in its ecdysial cycle. Vas deferens factor and spermatophore weight of male prawns show a declining tendency from post to premolt phases with a successive reduction in the biochemical composition of vas deferens and terminal ampoule. The correlation analysis indicate differential intensity of coefficients between biochemical and morphometrical relationships of semen and spermatophore production of P. Indicus.
- ItemCitric Acid as a Feed stimulant(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India)Cochin, 1997) R. S., Balamurali; C. M., AravindanUtility of citric acid as a feed stimulant for fry of Ctenopharyngodon idella was tested. The fry ate more feed containing dry aquatic macrophyte when citric acid was added. Food consumption, feed conversion efficiency and specific growth rate were higher at 0.01 M citric acid concentration.
- ItemEvaluation of two Empirical Devices for Measurement of Fish Texture(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India)Cochin, 1997) Hassan, Femeena; George, Sajan; Mathew, Saleena; Mukundan, M.KTwo types of texturometers (weight-operated and spring operated) were fabricated for the evaluation of fish texture. These devices were used to measure the toughness of twenty species of commercially important fishes in raw and cooked conditions. Texture was also evaluated by organoleptic method. A significant positive correlation could be obtained between organoleptic scores and the texturometer readings in the case of fish fillets both in raw and cooked condition.
- ItemOn the Intensity of Exploitation of Berried Females of Macrobrachium rosenbergii (de Man) in the Vembanad Lake(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India)Cochin, 1997) M, Harikrishnan; Kurup, B. MadhusoodanaThe annual exploited stock of Macrobrachium rosenbergii during 1994-95 from Vembanad lake is computed at 112.35 tons of which 66.22 tons was constituted by the female population. Contribution of berried and spent females were in the order of 23.43 tons and 5.02 tons respectively. Highest exploitation of berried (13.24 tons) and spent (3.39 tons) females were noticed in October while zone 11 accounted for maximum landings of berried prawns (3.6 tons). More than 50% of the berried females were found to be exploited from upstream part of the lake during September and October. In zone 4, 49.59% of the total spawner was comprised of spent females in the month of October. Among the various type of fishing gears and methods, "Pongu Veechal" accounted for exploitation of 75 and 79% of berried and spent females respectively. Temporal and spatial variations in the intensity of exploitation of ovigerous females and spent females are given. Intensity of recruitment over fishing being exercised on the stock of M. rosenbergii of Vembanad lake is brought out and the methods by which conservation measures can easily be imposed for replenishment of stock is also highlighted.
- ItemCosts and Earnings of Trawlers operating at Tuticorin, Tamilnadu(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India)Cochin, 1997) Senthilathiban, R; Venkataramanujam, K; Selvaraj, P; Sanjeeviraj, GThe aspects of profitability and economic efficiency of mechanised boats fitted with 106 HP marine diesel engine were studied at Tuticorin, Tamilnadu. Random sampling was followed to select 10 respondents from among the owner-operators of the above said boats. Data collection was carried out once a week for a time span of 53 weeks from July 1992 to June 1993. Thus a total of 530 fishing trips were considered for data processing and the economic estimates are for an average fishing trip. The fixed cost and variable cost per trip were estimateed as Rs. 320.24 and Rs. 4016.20 respectively. The mean gross returns was Rs. 6738.57 and the meen net profit came to Rs. 2402. Important indicators of economic efficiency were also estimated and discussed. The predominent item of cost was fuel. The earnings were influenced by fish landings as well as fish prices prevailing in different seasons
- ItemEco-Friendly Demersal Fish Trawling Systems(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India)Cochin, 1997) Mounsey, R.P; Prado, JTrawling has impacts on the seabed when various elements of bottom rigging, particularly the trawl boards and goundrope, skip ub or dig into the substrate. Trawl fishermen rig their gear to efficiently sweep the seabed which results in the destaiction of marine organisms or change the substrate. In northern Australian fork rigged semi-pelagic trawl system has been developed which was found compatible with that of a standard similarly sized demersal trawl system. Although this system had significantly less impact on the substrate, and produced a higher quality product, fishermen found it difficult to operate.Consequently the original standard demersal trawl system was then slightly modified in order to achive similar results. The modified system has proven its commercial viability in Australia's tropical seas. The ongoing reserch is now focussing on further simplifying the standard system with a possible cross-over board to net, bridle arrangement. This paper describes the three systems, includeing the general rigging arrangements and net design
- ItemDevelopment of Ready-to-fry Crab Products(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India)Cochin, 1997) Raju, C.V; Bhaskar, N; Dhananjaya, SCrabs are one of the major components of seafood industry in the world. This study contains the development of two important ready to fry products from crab meat viz., crab sticks and crab cutlets. The suitable recipes for these products are standardized and their chemical analysis recorded.
- ItemUse of Phaseolus trilobatus as Protein Source in the Diet of Labeo rohita Fingerlings(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India)Cochin, 1997) Devi, Chamundeswari; Vijayaraghavan, ShanthaIn the present study groundnut cake was partially replaced with whole seeds of Phaseolus trilobatus at 20%, 40% or 60% levels and the pelleted feeds were fed to the fingerlings of Labeo rohita. The growth performance of the test groups was compared with the control group fed on groundnut cake based pelleted feed over a period of six months. Though all the test groups exhibited significant increase in growth parameters compared to control group, the best growth parameters compared to control group, was observed at 20% inclusion level.
- ItemDiet of Parapenaeopsis stylifera (H. Milne Edwards) from Mangalore Region(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India)Cochin, 1997) Anantha, C.S; Shanbhogue, S.L; Bhaskar, N; Reddy+, G.V.S.; Raju, C.VParapenaeopsis stylifera, an important penaeid shrimp caught along Mangalore coast was taken for the study of its diet. The stomach contents of 3197 specimens, of which 68.75%, females and 31.25% males, were analysed. The analysis of gut contents indicated P. stylifera to be an omnivorous bottom feeder. The stomach contents mainly consisted of crustaceans, mud and detritus, vegetable matter, gastropods, bivalves, diatoms and sand particles. P. stylifera was also found to feed on polychaetes. Juvenile shrimp fed more on diatoms and vegetable matter while adult fed mainly on crustaceans, mud and detritus. Higher feeding intensity occurred with sexual maturity of shrimp
