A side trawler was converted into a tuna long liner for this purpose.
- ItemStudy On Primary Production And Its Importance In An Integrated Fisheries Research Programme(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India) Cochin, 1964) Raghu Prasad, R.The importance of the ocean as a source of cheap protein food is too well-known to be emphasised. In recent years there has been a tremendous increase in the fishing activity in all maritime nations and during the last few years the total world production has markedly grown. This study explains the importance of a planned exploitation according to scientific principles to preserve the availability and natural fluctuations in the abundance of stocks of marine fish and other commercially important organisms.
- ItemOn a rational criterion for assigning batch number to processed products of shrimps(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India) Cochin, 1964) Banerji, S.K.Investigations were conducted to find the variability of processed shrimps with respect to two quality characteristics, namely, the numbers of deteriorated and discoloured pieces. Samples were collected for three days from two arbitrarily selected processing factories from Cochin at the pre-freezing stages. Results show that both the quality characteristics vary significantly between different size-grades, but while the variation in the number of deteriorated pieces between days is not significant, the variation in the number of discoloured pieces between days is significant.
- ItemFishery Development And Administration In India(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India) Cochin, 1964) Chidambaram, K.This paper deals with the importance of fisheries administration in effective planning and successful execution of fisheries development programmes. The great diversity in the organisation of fisheries departments in the states of India is described.
- ItemThe Protein, Peptide And Free Amino-Acid Contents Of Some Species Of Gracilaria From South-East Coast Of India(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India) Cochin, 1964) Lewis, E.J.Four species of Gracilaria are investigated for their free amino-acid contents, as well as amino-acid constituents in the proteins and the peptides, using quantitative paper chromatographic technique. Amino-acid constituents of different species of Gracilaria differ only in amount, while free amino-acids and the amino-acids in the peptides vary both in quality and quantity. A number of amino-acids recorded as protein constituents have even escaped detection in the peptides, while in the free state they occur either in all the species or in some only except homocystine. Moreover, some amino-acids occur exclusively in the free state.
- ItemBiology Of Balanus Amphitrite Communis (Darwin) In The Cochin Harbour Waters(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India) Cochin, 1964) John, P.A.Seasonal viariations in the incidence on fresh surfaces, breeding season, rate of growth and mortality of Balanus amphitrite communis was studied for a period of twelve months in the Cochin harbour waters, situated 76̊ 14'E and 90̊ 57'N, and subjected to annual seasonal changes in salinity.
- ItemTechnical Terms In Fishing Gear Materials And Gear Fabrication(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India) Cochin, 1964) Eapen, P.K.Papers dealing with technical terms in fisheries science are few. This paper however, covers only one or two aspects of the subject, namely fishing gear materials and fishing gear fabrication. Similar papers on other aspects are also planned. Short explanations or descriptions are also given wherever considered necessary.
- ItemLife history of prawns: a review of recent studies with special reference to Indian species(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India) Cochin, 1965) Krishna Menon, M.The paper contains a brief review of the studies on the life histories of Indian species of prawns chiefly belonging to the family Penaeidae. References to similar work carried out outside India are furnished where significant variations have been observed. The three main larval stages viz., Nauplius, Protozoea and Zoea (Mysis) and their important characteristics, including modes of locomotion, are described. The post-larval development of one species that has been studied in detail (Metapenaeus dobsoni) is indicated in outline. Some aspects of the bionomics of these prawns, especially breeding and migration, are also briefly dealt with in view of their relevance in their life cycle. An outline of the life histories of some Palaemonid prawns of both fresh water and marine habitats is added at the end and the need for well- planned investigations in regard to species of such economic value as Palaemon carcinus (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) is indicated.
- ItemBreeding behaviour in Macrobrachium rosenbergii (De Man)(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India) Cochin, 1965) Mallikarjuna Rao, R.During the course of experimentations on the inducement of breeding in Macrobrachium rosenbergii (De Man) under laboratory conditions, detailed observations on the mating behaviour of the species have been made, which have been elaborated in this account. Various behaviour patterns have been analysed critically and the probable directive and releasive factors for these behaviour patterns discussed. Differences in behaviour of the male resulting from the introduction of another mature male in the arena have been described. An aberrant displacement activity which has been observed in one of the males has also been discussed.
- ItemPawn fishery in Gujarat location of new prawn grounds off Veraval(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India) Cochin, 1965) AnonDetails about the three departmental vessels, Gulf shrimp, Indian Salmon and Silver Pomfret and gear in the exploratory fishing off Veraval coast are reported. Potential prawn fishing grounds have been located by their operation in section 20-70, 21-69 and 22-69 in the cruises conducted in October, 1962. Observation regarding suitability of gear and composition of catch are given. The possibility of better prawn grounds occurring in areas deeper than the present grounds is indicated.
- ItemThe free and combined amino acid contents in species of Caulerpa from southeast coast of India(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India) Cochin, 1965) Lewis, E.J.Caulerpa racemosa var. macrophysa, C. racemosa var cornyphora and C. scalpelliformis are analyzed by quantitative paper chromatographic technique for their amino acid contents in proteins, peptides and free state. It is found that no appreciable variation occurs in the quality of amino acid make up in these algae; but quantitative differences are apparent in them. Moreover, both qualitative and quantitative variations occur in the amino acid make up of the peptides, and in the free state. The results are compared with those of the other investigations.
- ItemPreservation of prawns with chemicals(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India) Cochin, 1965) Shaikhmahamud, Fatima; Magar, N. G.The preservation of prawns with boric acid, dipotassium hydrogen phosphate, sodium bisulphite, ascorbic acid, citric ascorbic acid mixture, acronise pd, foromycin and penicillin have been investigated. Acronise pd, foromycin and citric ascorbic acid mixture in the order named proved the most effective inhibitors of growth of the natural mixture flora at temperatures between -18°C and 28°C; while foromycin inhibited yeast growth and sodium bisulphite and boric acid retarded melanosis. Acronise pd caused marked inhibition of bacterial growth in 5 to 50 per ml concentration, when used as an immersion medium for 10 to 15 minutes. The other chemicals used exerted a less intense action or were without any effect.
- ItemEvaluation Of Chemical Tests For The Quality Of Prawns(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India) Cochin, 1965) Shaikhmahamud, F.; Magar, N.G.The object of this study was to determine the value of physical, bacteriological and chemical tests used to find out and compare the indices of quality of prawns stored at 0°C and at 18°C. pH value, nature of drip, the total bacterial count, presence or absence of tryptophan, trimethylamine content, glycogen, lactic acid, vitamins such as thiamin, riboflavin and niacin were estimated periodically to evaluate the quality of prawns stored at 0°C, whereas in addition to organoleptic changes, pH, bacterial count, nature of growth in peptone water, soluble protein in salt solution and loss of moisture, glycogen, lactic acid, and changes in vitamin B contents were noted periodically for prawns stored at -l8°C. Riboflavin and niacin were not affected appreciably but the retention of thiamin in prawns was very low.

- ItemEffect of different media on the determination of the number of micro organisms in frozen prawns (shrimp)(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India) Cochin, 1965) Rajagopal, M.V.The Indian standards Institution have recently laid down specifications for the grading of frozen shrimp of which the bacterial examination of the product forms a significant part. Work carried out in this regard in our laboratories have shown that various improvements could be made in the composition of the medium to obtain a more true picture of the total bacterial count. Changes in the medium for total bacterial count have, therefore, been suggested and the reasons for the same discussed.
- ItemDetermination of ubiquinone and tocopherol in heart, liver and muscle tissues of fresh water fish, Rohu (Labeo rohita, Hamilton)(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India) Cochin, 1965) Pawar, S.S.; Mager, N.G.The liver, heart and muscle tissues of Rohu, (Labeo rohita, Hamilton) were examined for their ubiquinone (UQ) and tocopherol contents. These three tissues contained respectively 11.60, 3.94 and 0.19 mg of ubiquinone and 10.16, 5.32 and 3.58 mg of tocopherol per 100 g. The 4% (V/V) of diethyl ether (EE) in light petroleum ether (PE) fractions of all three tissues on paper chromatographic separation gave spots having the same Rf value as standard ubiquinone-50 (UQ 10). Both the 4% and 6% (V/V) diethyl ether in light petroleum ether fraction of liver, heart and muscle tissues gave a single spot with the same Rf value as α – tocopherol.
- ItemPrawn fishing by M.F.V. Jheenga in Bombay waters(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India) Cochin, 1965) Tagore, PradipThe design and construction of the motor fishing vessel Jheenga of the Deep Sea Fishing Station of the Government of India, Bombay, the areas covered and the gear used by her in 1959-63 are described. The prawn catches in relation to the total catches, and their catch rates in different months in area 18-72 in Bombay region which was fished continuously during the five years period have been studied with a view to ascertaining their seasonal abundance. The results indicate the availability of the prawns in the region for the major part of the year from March to October-November. High catches with high catch rates forming high percentage of their abundance in total catches are obtained in July to October.
