- ItemSystem Analysisof a Prawn Freezing Plant - I. Analysis of Raw Prawn Preparation and Freezing Operations(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India) Cochin, 1993)A system analysis approach has been taken to study and analyse various operations of a hypothetical prawn freezing plant. Results of analysis for processing three different products showed that the data on rate of prawn handling by a number of workers can be fitted to linear relations, and optimum operating conditions can be arrived at with minimum freezer idle time and maximum number of loads per freezer. lt has been further found that scheduling of prawn preparation time is very crucial during the early stage of processing.

- ItemStudies on the Preparation of Functional Fish Protein Concentrate from Nemipterus japonicus by Enzymatic Method(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India)Cochin, 1993) .Setty, T.M.R; Mahesh, T; Shetty, T.S; Ravishankar, C.NThe study was carried out to develop a suitable method for the preparation of functional fish protein concentrate(FFPC) from theundcrutilized fish, Japanese threadfin bream (Nemipterus japonicus) and to evaluate their functional properties, sensory and chemical characteristics. The FFPCs were prepared employing proteolytic enzymes to partially hydrolyse proteins and then dried in vacuum as well as in a spray drier. The FFPCs obtained by · these processes exhibited better functional and sensory properties when oompared to oonventionally prepared fish protein concentrate.
- ItemSensory Attributes of Non-irradiated and Irradiated Semi-dried Fish during Ambient Temperature Storage(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India) Cochin, 1993) Vinh, P.Q.; Alur, M.D; Nair, P.MGamma irradiation of semi-dried Bombay duck and shrimps at a dose of 3 kGy controlled effectively infestation during prolonged storage. ln addition mould growth was also controlled in Bombay duck. Ammoniacal odour found in non-irradiated shrimps was not detectable in ir-radiated shrimps. Thus, gamma radiation resulted in insect-free, mould-free and acceptable semi-dried fish.
- ItemA Study on the Piscifauna of Gandhisagar Reservoir with Particular Reference to the Abundance of Commercial Varieties of Fish(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India) Cochin, 1993) Kartha, K.N; Rao, K.SA study of the pisdfauna of Gandhisagar reservoir, Chambal river, Madhya Pradesh, during 1985-86, has revealed the presence of 41 fish species belonging to 5 orders, 14 families and 28 genera. Commerdally important species were Calla catla, lnbeo ruhitn, Cirrhinus mrigala, followed by lnbeo mlbasu, Aorichthys nor, A. seenglmla, Wallago attu, Ompok bimaculatus and Silonah silondh. Relative dominance of exotic species, Calla aatla and Lnbeo rohita, in the landings contributing nearly 98% (1985-86) has confirmed that these species have successfully established themselve tn the ewsystem of Gandhtsagar. Comparison with the results of preimpoundment surveys has indicated a reduction in the species diversity, with the establishment of reservoir.
- ItemDrying Characteristics of Salted Fish in a Greenhouse-type Solar Dryer(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India) Cochin, 1993) Demir, Sebnem; Evcin, Serdar~ this study, the drying characteristics of salted fish (Merlangius merlangus) were in~ cshgated by the drying experiments carried out in a greenhouse constructed for dehydration and augmented by parabolic reflectors. Drying time of samples was 26 h in the greenhouse and 38 h for samples dried outside to 25% moisture content. It was decided to apply thin layer drying theory in order to explain and compare drying characteristics. Drying constant of that equation was minimum for samples dried in the greenhouse on the conveyor belt augmented by solar reflectors.
- ItemChanges in Oxygen Uptake in Mullet, Liza parsia (Hamilton-Buchanan) Exposed to Dichlorvos(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India)Cochin, 1993) Mohapatra, B.C; Noble, AFor acute study on oxygen consumption Liza parsir were exposed 96 h to 0.482 ppm of organophosphate insecticide, Dichlorvos 76% (96 h LC so value) and for sublethal effects to I/S, 1/10 and 1/15th of it for 15, 30 and 45 days. Initially the consumption of oxygen increased. But it was followed by decrease in acute experiment. In sub-lethal exposures the oxygen consumption remained high without decrease. However, the increase was higher in lower concentrations. 'l11e experiments were conducted ln I brackishwater medium of salinity 10.0 ;l: 1.0%°, temperature 27.5 i 1.5 °C and pH 6.0 1 0.5.
- ItemMicrobial Stability of Certain Cured Fishery Products(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India) Cochin, 1993) Abraham, T. Jawahar; Sukumar, D; Shanmugam, S.A; Jeyachandran, PThe microbial stability of cured fishery products processed by improved curing and packaging methods was studied. Improved drying methods rcsulted in lower microbial coiuits than trade samples. Slight to strong brown discolouration was noticed during storage in dried anchovy, Stolcphorus indicus. The yellow discolouration of dried salted seer appeared to be checked by lil IA treatment. Bl [A treatment in combination with a dip in 3 percent calcium propionate solution was effective in controlling fungal growth and yellow discolouration. Cooking and hot smoking of tuna, Euthynnus affinis, yielded a stable product with lo\v moisture content, while the cold blanched, hot smoked fish spoiled rapidly. ln pickled prawn, l’arap¢na¢opsis stylifera, with condiments and pll level around 4.75, the microbial count was greatly reduced. ln lactic fermented prawn pickle, there was a steep rise in staphylococci count initially which then decreased with the reduction in pll level.
- ItemSeasonal and Spatial Variations in Fishing Intensity and Gearwise Landings of the Vembanad Lake(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India) Cochin, 1993) Kurup, B.Madhusoodana; Sankaran, T.M; Rabindranath, P; Sebastian, M.JThe variations noticed in the fishing intensity on an annual basis in the different regions of the Vembanad lake arc discussed. Stake nets and dip nets acconnted for 72.48% of the total landings; the former contributing to 53.14%. The contributions from gill nets, seines, cast nets, line fishing and other indigenous fishing methods are respectively 10.15, 9.68, 3.49, 2.54 and 1.66%. Stake and dip nets are almost confined to the northern sector (Cochin backwaters), contributing 57 and 20.7% respectively of the production. Seines and gill nets acconnted for 8.5 and 8.3% respectively in this sector. In the southern sector (Thannecrmukkom to Allcppey), the stationary gears are rarely noticed, the major part of the landings being obtained from gill nets (34.34%), seines (24.67%) and cast nets (19.04%).
- ItemFecundity Studies on Sand Whiting, Sillago sihama (Forskal) from Karwar Waters(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India)Cochin, 1993) Reddy, C.R; Neelakantan, BFecundity indices were estimated in order to find the trends in fecundity with increase in length and weight of spawners. The different indices calculated were relative fecundity (Bagenal, 1957, De Silva, 1973), number of ova per gram ovary weight, coefficient of maturity (Nikolsky, 1961) and gonosomatic index. The number of ova per gram weight of fish varied from 287 to 587 with a mean value of 442, while the number of ova per gram ovary weightranged between 3533 and 7659 with 6120 as average. The coefficient of maturity values were found to vary from 5.72 to 9.07 (average 735) and gonosomatic index from 6.07 to 9.98 (average 7.95).
- ItemRaw Material Purchase Pattern in Seafood Plants in Kerala(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India) Cochin, 1993) Ramachandran, A; Samuel, C.T; Ranganathan, NInadequate and irregular supply of raw materials arc the foremost problems faced by the processing plants in India. A study has been carried out on the purchase pattern of raw materials to aSSt.'SS the situation in the seafood plants of Kcrala, during 1983-84. 50% of the processing plants arc located within one krn from the main landing centre in a region. 82% of the plants have their own transportatlon facilities. 64% of the plants in Cochin region took 4 to 6 h for bringing the raw materials to the plants after purchase. This was between 6 and 8 h in Kollam region. In all the plants, the main item of purchase was confined to shrimps. The raw material purchases in all the plants were far below the installed capacity. In 39o/o of the working days, the plants selected for the study had no purchase or production during the study period.
- ItemStorage Properties of Gamma-Irradiated Semi-dried Fish Varieties(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India) Cochin, 1993) Vinh, P .Q; Alur, M.D; Nair, P.MSeveral varieties of semi-dried unirradiated and irradiated (1&3 kGy) fish, namely, anchovies (Stulephorus commersonn), Bombay duck (llarpodon nehereus), shrimp (Penaeus indicus) and Vietnam scad (Alepes mate) were stored at ambient temperature (26°C). During the course of storage, quality characteristics such as total bacterial count (TBC), mould count and biochemical indices of freshness were studied. These studies indicated that initial TBC of semi-dried fish varied from 7(1)-54(X) cfu per g of fish, while mould count ranged from 27-15(X) cfu per g. llowever, upon irradiation at 3 kGy, initial bacterial load was considera bly reduced. Vietnam scad was not contaminated with mould after 35 months of storage at room temperature. Indices such as TVA and TVBN increased during storage at room temperature for both unirradiated and irradiated samples.
- ItemFurther Observations on the Comparative Efficacy of Some Indigenous Methods for the Protection of Underwater Timber Structures(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India) Cochin, 1993) Rao, M.V; Cherian, C.J; Cheriyan, P.VResults of long-term evaluation of several indigenous methods for protection of underwater timbers against wood boring organisms are reported in this paper. While unprotected control poles were totally destroyed due to severe infestation by the wood borers within a period of 9 months, the poles covered with coppcr-crome-arscnic (CCA)/ creosote fuel oil (CFA) treated coir rope lasted for 5 years, the ones studded with iron nails gave a life of 16 years and those plastered with cement over CCA treated coir rope winding/ scattered nailing interconnected with winding wire were in sound condition even afterwards. Specific advantages offered by the methods in curtailing marine borer attack arc also mentioned.
- ItemInfluence of Species and Size on Weight Loss during Thawing of Frozen Shrimps(Society of Fisheries Technologists (India) Cochin, 1993) Venugopal, 'l`.NWeight loss of two species of frozen shrimps viz. Parnpenaeopsis stylifcra andMctapmacus dvbsoni packed as peeled and undeveined and as has peeled and deveined were studied. ln both species weight loss inaeased as the size of the shrimps decreased and the difference in weight loss of large and small shrimp was found significant in both PD and PUD. Between the two species there were no significant differences in weight loss in both PD and PUD meat of same size grades except in PUD 2(1)/3(1) grade.
